So if the LARGER number five more than the SMALLER number then:
L = 5 + S
L + S = 31
5 + S + S = 31
5 + 2 S = 31
Subtract 5 to both sides
5 + 2 S - 5 = 31 - 5
2 S = 26
Divide both sides by 2
S = 26 / 2 = 13
L = 5 + S
L = 5 +13 = 18
Smaller number = 13
Larger number = 18
