    an electron emitted? THen atomic number goes up one, and atomic mass number remains the same.

    The subscripts must add up.
The superscripts add up.
Just like in balanced equations the coefficients must add up.
Loss of electron means nuclear charge goes up one and the mass stays the same. The periodic table will tell you the next element up.

___CR + -1 e ---> + Y

<sub>24</sub><sup>51</sup>Cr + <sub>-1</sub><sup>o</sup>e ==><sub>23</sub><sup>51</sup>Y
Y must be V since that is element #23.

    No, but I shall be happy to check your work. The goal here is to HELP you do them so you learn to do them for yourself. It won't help you for me to do them for you.

    OK. Just make the numbers add up.
For the Cr problem we started with, note that the subscripts on the left are 24 and -1. So algebraically, add +24 and -1 and what do we get? 23. That's how I knew the subscript on the right was 23. For the superscript, we had 50 + 0 on the left so Y must have a mass of 50 on the right. Now we know Y has an atomic number (number of protons) of 23 and it has a mass number (number of neutrons) of 50. What element is Y. The periodic table tell us that element #23 is V.

    Also, let me point out that a confusing point in your question is the you SHOW an electron being ADDED BUT you SAY and electron is emitted. Two different animals. Both Bob Pursley and I answered the first post the same way and give the answer for an emitted electron but when I wrote the equation I wrote it for an added electron (as the equation states it).
