Claudia has received 19 more Xmas cards than Larry.
Larry has received 17 less than Vicki.
Jorge has 8 more cards than Lori.
Vicki has received 5 more than Jorge.
Larry & Jorge have 44 between them.
How many have the 5 received between them?

Lori = x
Jorge = (x + 8)
Larry = 44 - Jorge = 44 - x - 8 = (36 -x)
Vicki = 17+Larry = 17+36 - x = (53-x)
Claudia = 19+Larry = 19+36-x =(55-x)
Vicki = 5+Jorge = 5+x+8 = (x + 13)
add (note 3 positive x and three negative x so no x in answer)

=( man I've been solving for a long time but there's another answer posted while I was solving! Oh well I'll post mine in a few minutes.

Wow that's hard. I solved it and, assuming each person got one card, got:

Claudia got 31 cards.
Larry got 12 cards.
Vicki got 29 cards.
Jorge got 32 cards.
Lori got 24 cards.

I set up the equation algebraicly. I'll leave you to do the adding (not to be mean or anything) and I hope I helped! Oh, and I used mostly Claudia to get the number for my equations.
