What are some possible uses for gelled methanol and why was it never used as a fuel in transportation?

Well it was never used as a fuel for transportation as it is extremely volatile. It's flash point is at 54 degrees F/ 12.2 degrees C.

Apparently it's used as chafing fuel but I'm only reading now what that actually is.
