                When did people stop using parchment and start using paper?

You see, I'm writing a story that takes place in 1851. They wrote in parchment back then, didn't they? Or did they have paper by then? Sorry, I feel stupid that I don't know this. I just want to make sure I have my facts straight.

    This was the height of the Industrial Revolution, so paper was mass-produced. They used paper in the 1850s. They'd been using paper for a long time.
