    Yes.  Summer is a noun.
Direct objects are always nouns or pronouns.
I think you're confused about the 8 parts of speech (noun, pronoun, adjective, adverb, verb, preposition, conjunction, interjection) and parts of a sentence (subject, verb, direct object, etc.)
