Why is it important to protect the rights of the accused in the United States Constitution?

This question is on my homework and I can't find anything that helps me.

Just because a person is accused of a crime doesn't mean s/he's guilty. A person in the U.S. is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty.

Anyone can be accused of something vile. However, accusing is easy. Proving is necessary and difficult.
