a = first piece
b = second piece
One piece is 10 cm longer than the other mean:
b = a + 10
a + b = 60
a + a + 10 = 60
2 a + 10 = 60 Subtract 10 to both sides
2 a + 10 - 10 = 60 - 10
2 a = 50 Divide both sides by 2
a = 50 / 2 = 25 cm
b = a + 10
b = 25 + 10 = 35 cm
b = second piece
One piece is 10 cm longer than the other mean:
b = a + 10
a + b = 60
a + a + 10 = 60
2 a + 10 = 60 Subtract 10 to both sides
2 a + 10 - 10 = 60 - 10
2 a = 50 Divide both sides by 2
a = 50 / 2 = 25 cm
b = a + 10
b = 25 + 10 = 35 cm
