John let out 50 foot of kite string when he observes that his kite is directly above a point on the ground 30 feet away from him, how high is the kite ?

Time for the Pythagorean Theorem!
30*2 + h^2 = 50^2
900 + h^2 = 2500
h^2 = 1600
h = 400
30*2 + h^2 = 50^2
900 + h^2 = 2500
h^2 = 1600
h = 400

40 ft is correct. c2 = a2 + b2; 502 = 302 + b2; 2500 = 900 + b2; b2 = 1600; b = 40 ft.
