total length = 15+3 = 18
total width = 9+3 = 12
so
path area = 12*18 - 9*15
total width = 9+3 = 12
so
path area = 12*18 - 9*15

Is this translation correct ?
A rectangular field is 15 m long and 9 m wide.
It has a path 1.5 m wide all around it.
Find the area of the path.
area of field = 15(9) m^2 =....
area of the whole thing = 18(12) m^2 = .....
(make a sketch to see where the 18 and 12 come from)
take the difference to get the area of the path
