One reason is that many children die in infancy or early childhood in the undeveloped world. Families tend to have many children to assure that a few children survive to care for the parents in their old age. It's also been shown that when women are literate, they're able to have higher hopes for themselves and their families and realize that too many children adds to the families' impoverishment.
