    Change that: The horizontal displacement is -5.
The qty (X + 5) is the independent variable. X + 5 = 0 when x = -5, hence the "origin" is displaced to the left.
In your other problem, the qty
(x -4) is the indep. var. x - 4 = 0 when x = +4.
