                a carpenter has a piece of lumber measuring 9 feet 6 and 3/4 inches long how much the carpenter saw off to be left with a piece 7 feet 11 and 5/16 inches long?

    haven't had to do this awkward type of calculation since 1972 when we switched to metric, but here it goes
9 feet, 6 inches plus 3/4 inches = 114 inches + 3/4 inch
7 feet, 11 inches plus 5/16 inch = 95 inches + 5/16
so 114+12/16 - (95+5/16)
= 19 plus 7/16 inches
= 1 foot, 7 and 7/16 inches.
Now don't forget about the width of the sawblade.
