Go to www.google.com and enter each place's name plus the word <b>population</b>.

I'd choose the one with the largest number of people living there.

Make sure you include the country's name with the city. Sometimes there are various spellings, too.

Yazd - 486,152 in 2011
Kars - 73,836 in 2011
Mashad - 2,766,000 in 2011 (2.766 million = 2,766,000)
Galata - 679
