Please help. I just want to make sure I'm doing this right. I have to write the abbreviated ground state electron configurations for the following:
nitrogen 2s^22p^3
chlorine 3s^23p^5
iron 3d^104s^2

Fe us not right.
I always thought the abbreviated structure had to show the filled structure before the outside shells. For example, I would write
N as[He]2s22p3 and
Cl as [Ne]3s2 3p5
The reason Fe is incorrect is because you put 10 electrons in the 3d. The 3d orbital can hold 10; however, Fe doesn't have 10 in it.
