What is the importance of History?

I was asked this and was like, umm to learn about important old things. *face palm* opps not how I wanted it to come out. (I got nervous) now my teacher asked my to write a paragraph answering this question. Any good ideas about what I should include?

Start off with something like history is important because you learn about how the world he have right now came to be. Than maybe provide an example.
