Asked by Matt-Please Help

Grass can grow up to six inches in a week depending upon temperature, humidity, and time of year. At this rate, how tall will the grass grow in 24 days?

My answer: 7 days x 6 inches=48 inches in 24 days

Can you please double check my answer or let me know if I did something wrong.

Thank you

If it were 21 days, since 21 = 7*3, it would grow 6*3 = 18 inches.

24 is not quite that simple. It grows

(24/7) * 6 = 144/7 inches

why did you multiply 6 by 4? You cannot multiply days by inches. The units make no sense. Instead, you want to convert days to inches, using the fact that

7days = 6inches

24days * 6in/7days = 6*24/7 in

You can always multiply by 1 without changing things. Since

7days = 6in,
7days/6in = 1
6in/7days = 1

If you had wanted to convert inches to days, as in, how ling will it take to grow 45 inches? You'd use the other conversion ratio:

45in * 7days/6in = 105/2 days

I kind of understand. I am going to study what you sent. So the answer to this problem then would be the grass would grow 144 inches in 24 days then.

No. It grows 144/7 = 20.57 inches.

Think about it. It takes 7 days to grow 6 inches.

24 is a little more than 3*7. So, it will grow a little more than 3*6 = 18 inches.

You need to work on your reading, too...
