ten years ago:
age of father --- x
age of son ---- (1/5)x or x/5
5 years ago:
father's age = x+5
son's age = x/5 + 5
son's present age = x/5 + 10
x/5 + 5 = (1/2)(x+5)
multiply each term by 10, the LCD
2x + 50 = 5(x+5)
2x + 50 = 5x + 25
25 = 3x
x = 25/3 or 8 1/3 years
son's present age = 25/15 + 10 = 11 2/3 years
check:
ages 10 years ago:
father 25/3 years
son 25/15 years
5 years ago:
father was 25/3 + 5 = 40/3
son was 25/15 + 5 = 20/3
The numbers work mathematically, but not in reality.
10 years ago, a father 8.33 years old has a son 1.67 years old??
