We can rewrite the expression 16 + 8 as 8x(2+1). Notice that 8 is the greatest common factor of 16 and 8. Use this same method to rewrite the expression 24 + 36 as the product of the greatest common factor of 24 and 36 and the sum of the remaining numbers.

12 times what is 24 ---> 2
12 times what is 36 --->3
so 24+36
= 12(2 + 3)

I understand now what you are saying 12 x 2=12 and then 12x3=36 but I thought I had to do
12x(x+x)would equal 60
