Rocket-powered sleds are been used to test the responses of humans to acceleration. Starting from rest, one sled can reach a speed of 495 m/s in 1.78 s and can be brought to a stop again in 2.16 s.

Find the acceleration of the sled while ac- celerating.
Answer in units of m/s2.

Find the acceleration of the sled when brak- ing.
Answer in units of m/s2.

1 answer

a = change in velocity/change in time = 495/1.78 m/s^2

braking is opposite velocity
a = -495/2.16 m/s^2

note the acceleration of gravity is about 10 m/s^2 so this is more than 25 g,scary.
