first number --- x
2nd number ---- 1/x
x + 1/x = 3
x^2 + 1 = 3x
x^2 - 3x + 1 = 0
using competing the square:
x^2 - 3x + 9/4 = -1 + 9/4
(x + 3/2)^2 = 5/4
x + 3/2 = ± √5/2
x = -3/2 ± √5/2
x = (-3 + √5)/2 or x = (-3 - √5)/2
2nd number ---- 1/x
x + 1/x = 3
x^2 + 1 = 3x
x^2 - 3x + 1 = 0
using competing the square:
x^2 - 3x + 9/4 = -1 + 9/4
(x + 3/2)^2 = 5/4
x + 3/2 = ± √5/2
x = -3/2 ± √5/2
x = (-3 + √5)/2 or x = (-3 - √5)/2
