A man walked 10 m north, then 5 m south. What distance did he walk? What is his final displacement?

2 answers

get out your graph paper and plot the motion.

Clearly the distance walked is 10+5 = 15

Now, where did he end up? How far is that from where he started?
2. An object is moving in a straight line with a constant velocity of 5 m/s in the west direction. How far will it have moved after 3 minutes. What is the object’s acceleration?

3. An object travels east with a velocity of 10 m/s. It accelerates at a rate of 2m/s2 for 100 s. What is the velocity of the object after 100 s?

4. An object has an initial velocity of 10 m/s north and then speeds up to 30 m/s in the same direction in 4 s. What is the acceleration of the object?

5. An object accelerates from rest to a speed of 125 m/s over a distance of 1000 m. What is the acceleration of the object and how long did it take for the object to reach that velocity?

6. A stone was dropped from some height and reached the ground in 5 s. From what height was it dropped?

7. A tennis ball is launched at a 30o angle with a velocity of 175 m/s. Calculate the horizontal and vertical components of the initial velocity.

9. A body is projected downward at an angle of 30o with the horizontal from the top of a
building 170 m high. Its initial speed is 40 m/s. How long will it take before striking the
ground?

10. A hose lying on the ground shoots a stream of water upward at an angle of 40o to the
horizontal. The speed of the water is 20 m/s as it leaves the hose. How high up will it
strike a wall which is 8 m away?

11. A ball is thrown upward at an angle of 30o to the horizontal and lands on the top edge of a
building that is 20 m away. The top edge is
5 m above the throwing point. How fast was the ball thrown?
