If you are doing something like interviews using qualitative methods, you may want to go with smaller sample sizes to develop a more in-depth study. If you are doing something like experiments using quantitative methods with samples from a particular population, you may want to go with larger sample sizes to provide information which will help make statistical inferences about the population as a whole.
