Hello. Dear Ms.Sue, I would be very grateful if you answered my question.
Is it possible to say "I heard steps behind" or is it necessarily "behind me"? I mean, is the object a must here?

It's not a must, but is much better. Using "me" makes it clear that the footsteps are heard in a specific place.
