18/48
Let's start by dividing the numerator and denominator by 2
18/48 = 9/24
That's still not the lowest terms. Now let's divide by 3.
9/24 = 3/8
I could have saved some time by dividing by 6 the first time.
Now you can do the same with 16/40. What is the lowest terms for that fraction?

Keep dividing both the numerator and denominator by 2 or 3 or any other divisor they have in common until you can't divide evenly any more.
