why is it that a question states that a person buys a car for R122 000 and pays 10% of the cost but then the answer to it they have multiplied the amount by 0.09 which is 9%?

sorry I meant 0.9 and it's not 9% nor 10%

Instead of taking 10% off, think of what would be left after you do that
100% - 10% = 90% <-----> 1 - .10 = .90
e.g. suppose your car costs R122 000,
take 10% which is R12 200 off
R122 000 - R 12 200 = R 109 800
- now take 90% or .9 of 122 000, that would also be 109 800 , same answer!
