One story from this unit is "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant. The theme of the story is the dangers of materialism and the pursuit of wealth. The reader can learn that true happiness and contentment cannot be achieved solely through material possessions. One supporting detail is when Madame Loisel borrows an expensive necklace to fit in with the upper class, only to lose it and spend the next ten years of her life in poverty trying to pay it back. Another supporting detail is when Madame Loisel finally tells her friend the truth about losing the necklace, only to find out that the necklace she had borrowed was a fake and was worth much less than the price they paid to replace it. From this story, the reader can learn the importance of being grateful for what they have and not getting caught up in the pursuit of wealth and material possessions.
