What are the differences between fields, records and files?

Need help trying to figure this out as what I can think of is just little as this
So - a field is a SUBSET of a record; a record in turn is a SUBSET of a file, and a file is a subset of a database but not sure if this was enough to say can someone help me please.

Although a file need not be part of a database. Plenty of them stand alone.
