12/4 = 3 so we have 12 1/4 cups plus the extra 1/4 cup gives us 13 1/4 cups.

if you multiply the denominator by the whole number you will get 12 (4x3=12) and then you add the numerator which would make you get 13 because (4x3=12+1=13)
