Why were Americans interested in expansion northward?

Ms. Sue
A few years ago I spent several hours driving north through the forests of northern Maine. There were very few towns -- and those that we saw were poor. It was drizzly and gloomy. After we crossed the mountain-top border into Quebec, the sun came out. We saw prosperous farms and towns stretching out on a fertile plain. Quebec at that point was immensely more appealing than Maine.
However, please check your book -- as I suspect your teacher expects you to say that we wanted to expand to the north for the fur trade and to claim British land.
