Many notable poets often lived in the New England states.

In the above sentence is New England an adjective? Im sure that many and notable are but I am unsure if New England is. Also i need to know the subject modifiers which i think are many and notable which I think modifys poets?????

Yes, New England is a proper adjective modifying states. Your other two adjectives are also right. They both modify the subject, poets.
