Most of us believed that the U.S. became involved in WW II to protect ourselves and our allies from the ruthless tyrannical ambitions of the German and Japanese Empires. Germany was rapidly conquering Europe while Japan was expanding in the Pacific. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, then a U.S. territory, sparked our declaration of war against the Axis powers.

More cynical and pragmatic historians view our entry into the war as an economic move to protect our trade with western Europe and the far eastern Pacific islands.
