do you mean
3 - x = sqrt (x^2 - 5) ??
if so
9 - 6 x + x^2 = x^2 - 5
6 x = 14
x = 7/3 = 2.33
x^2 - 5 must be +
so
|x| >/= sqrt 5 or 2.24
