first look at what you know:

1) the TOTAL number of books IS 300
this tells you ADD
the answer will be 300

2) there are 3 piles
this tells you you will add
3 things

What do you NOT know?
the number of books in the
third pile
use the letter "x" for this

now try to put your problem together

pile 1 pile 2 pile 3

+ + x = 300

see if you can figure it out now.

I would start with defining the

number of books in the third pile is x
then the number of books in the 2nd pile is 2x
and the first pile is then 2x+10

(I just translated the English to Math)

their sum is 300
x + 2x + 2x+10 = 300
5x = 290
x = 58

Third pile has 58 books

(2nd has 116 , the first has 126
check: 58+116+126 = 300)

OOPS,
I read that as 300, should have been 3000
easy to fix

x+2x+2x+10 = 3000
5x = 2990
x = 598
