I have trouble solving distance rate problems. I have a worksheet that I want to complete. I will post one question in hopes that someone can break it down so I am able to solve other distance rate problems. (Step by Step please.) Thank you.
An aircraft carrier made a trip to Guam and back. The trip there took three hours and the trip back took four hours. It averaged 6km/h on the return trip. Find the average speed of the trip. I know the answer is 8km/hr. I just don't know how to work the problem

return trip took 4 hours at 6 km/h
so d = 24 km
(that must be to Guam from the harbor entrance buoy :)
total round trip took 3+4 = 7 hours
total distance = 24+24 = 48 km
average speed = 48 km/7 h = 6.85 km/h
so d = 24 km

Hey, you asked for the average speed
but you answered 8
8 is the speed OUTBOUND
24 km/3 hours = 8
8 is the speed out, not the average speed
