Use the order of operations aka PEMDAS. Parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and then lastly subtraction.
5+3+2+4+ 40*1 -1/8 = ?
Do the multiplication first: 40 multiplied by 1 is 40.
Next add all the addition terms up together: 5+3+2+4=14
14 + 40 is 54.
The last step is to subtract 1/8 from 54.
