What is the least possible value of the expression if two of the values 1, 2, 4, and 8 are substituted in any order for the variables x and y?

1/9^x = 9^-x
9^-x /9^y = 9^-x * 9^-y = 9^-(x+y)
so
z = -(x+y)
4 asnd 8 gives
z = -12
and 9^-12 is about as small as we are going to get
9^-x /9^y = 9^-x * 9^-y = 9^-(x+y)
so
z = -(x+y)
