I want to wear a fur coat.
I want to put on a fur coat.

Do I have to use 'wear' or 'put on'? Are both OK? Which one is comonly used?

"I want to wear a fur coat" means that you want to wear it for several minutes, hours -- or maybe years.

"I want to put on a fur coat" means that you just want to wear it briefly -- maybe only for a minute or two. "To put on" is an act that is over in a few seconds.
