Question

Jody has two windows that are both squares. Let s represent the side length of one of the windows. write an algebraic expression with an exponent to represent the combined area of both the windows. Would it be s^2 or s^4?

Answers

Ms. Sue
Imagine that each window measures 5 feet on a side. So each window's area would be s^2 = 25 square feet. Two windows would be 50 square feet.

What is 5^4?

625

could you explain to me how you go your answer more in depth?
Ms. Sue
So --

2(s^2) = Area of 2 windows

Versace
thank you so much!!
Ms. Sue
You're very welcome.

Hi again!!! The area of jody's ceiling is 160ft. She is going to paint it and the paint that she is going to get says that it covers 300 ft. If the paint store associate recommends that jody should put 2 coats of paint on the ceiling... then will one can of paint be enough? I thought no but idk.. how to explain it
Ms. Sue
160 * 2 = _______ square feet

Is that more or less than 300 square feet?
Versace
320.. that is more than 300
Ms. Sue
Right. So 1 can would not be enough to paint the ceiling with 2 coats.

Versace
Thank you! Now if jody has 4 walls with an combined area of 672 ft... how many cans of paint will she need to do 2 coats of paint on each wall
Ms. Sue
And your answer is?

Versace
Oh yes!! I thought that it would be no because I thought that 4 cans would be enough to be able to do 2 coats... but idk if that is right
Ms. Sue
672 * 2 = 1,344 square feet.

Yes, 4 cans is needed.

Versace
oh. I was right!! Thank you soso much!! And sorry for bothering you! Happy halloween
Ms. Sue
You're welcome. And you didn't bother me at all. I enjoy working with you.

Happy Halloween to you, too.
