Depends upon the context. How about abbreviations like M.D., HMO, G-I, Ob-Gyn, and MRI? You see them all the time.

Abbreviations are acceptable in <I>any</I> field if (1) they are common knowledge to the audience or (2) the meaning of the abbreviation is given the first time it is used in a message.
