because multiplication of powers results in adding exponents, one can reduce this to
3^n*3^1 - 3^n*3^-2
3^n * (3-1/9)=3^n (2 8/9)

3^n*3^1 - 3^n*3^-2
3^n * (3-1/9)=3^n (2 8/9)
