Question
Is initial velocity can be negative?
in this case,
A stone is dropped from a ballon while ascending at the rate of 8mps. The stone reaches the ground in 6 sec. What is the height of the balloon when the stone was dropped?
What is the sign for the initial velocity? Can someone help me with this? Im really confused.

I saw it, but why is it the initial velocity is negative?
The initial velocity is negative,because
the stone was moving upward before it began to free fall. In other words, the balloon containing the stone was moving upward as the stone began to move downward.
If the stone had been THROWN downward
from a stationary object, the initial
velocity would have been positive.
