A gallon of a certain kind of paint will cover 224 square feet of surface. In painting two walls; one 36' by 8' and the other 24' by 9', the number of gallons of paint used is:

I'm sorry I don't really know what to do, could someone please explain?

First find the total area of the two walls.

36 * 8 = 288 square feet
24 * 9 = 216 square feet

Add the two totals and divide by 224.
