There were 35 gallons of water in a tank and 4.5 gallons of water in a pail. An equal amount of water was poured into the tank and the pail. The ratio of the water in the tank to that pail became 7:2.

If x gallons were poured, then
(35+x)/(4.5+x) = 7/2
x = 7.7
Now it's easy peasy.

I am afraid that unless you post HOW you receive the answer, your equation really does not help. Unless you mean to say that you would do 35+4.5+2x=3.5 That may make sense, though I am not sure. I will have to check

I believe that the answer is actually 7.8 gallons. Let me explain. The x-x cancels out, leaving it as 35/4.5 Dividing that gives you 7.8 gallons.
