Why would people attack the assumption of homo economicus?

Because many people choose lives that have little to do with commerce, accumulation of material goods, etc. Think of certain religious orders: the focus is on other aspects of life besides the economic. Models of economic behavior are imperfect because what motivates people isn't always the same thing.
