    well, if x = .99 I get 1.50
if x = .999 then 1.500
that is because
numerator = (x-1)(x+2)
denominator = (x-1)(x+1)
so what we really have is
(x+2)/(x+1) which is 1.5 at x = 1
It is true that the original function is undefined at x = 1
