Mission San Diego was founded on July 16, 1769 by Spanish friar Junipero Serra.

This was the first mission in the chain of 21. It is known as Mother of the Missions.

El Camino Real is the kings highway .In Alta California it begins in san Diego and ends 600 miles north at mission San Francisco Solano in Sonoma. They built the missions so that you could walk from one mission to the next in one day.
Four of the missions are still run by Franciscans.
One of the bells is original –it is one of the larger bells.
The local Native Americans were commonly referred to as Kumeyaay. They lived in this area for 12,000 years before the Spanish settlers.
