I see a common factor of 10^7
(5x10^7)+(2.3x10^7)
= 10^7(5 + 2.3)
= 7.3 x 10^7
your answer should have said 73 x 10^6
In general a number in scientific notation should be a number between 1 and 9 multiplied by a power of 10
so 73 x 10^6, although correct in its value, is not in proper scientific form
