The three of them agree to divide all the water equally among them. Lou gives $2 for the water he receives, which James and Karen agree to divide fairly between the two of them. So the total water they have is
2 + 1 3/4 gallons
= 15/4 gallons or 3.75 gallons

So in effect 3.75 gallons cost $2.00
1 gallon would cost 2/3.75 = .53...

so James should receive 2(.5333...) or
$1.07
