At first, the Spanish and other explorers were looking for faster trade routes to the orient -- faster than sailing around the southernmost part of Africa and then on to India or China or wherever they wanted to go.

<b>But the question asks what incentive they had for SETTLING the Caribbean Islands. That's different from motives of discovery!</b>
