At first, the Spanish and other explorers were looking for faster trade routes to the orient -- faster than sailing around the southernmost part of Africa and then on to India or China or wherever they wanted to go.
But the question asks what incentive they had for SETTLING the Caribbean Islands. That's different from motives of discovery!
